Of all the duct work in a home, the dryer vent is the one that is genuinely about safety, not air quality. A lint-clogged vent is a real fire hazard, and clearing it is one of the cheapest, highest-value pieces of home maintenance most people never think about.

The numbers most people have not heard
Roughly 15,000 clothes-dryer fires happen in Canada every year, and the leading cause is the same one every time: failure to clean the lint. Lint is highly flammable, and it builds up in the vent line behind the wall where you cannot see it, not just in the lint trap you empty between loads.
The City of Toronto alone averages about 39 dryer fires a year, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's guidance keeps coming back to the same point: keep the lint clear and keep the air moving.
The warning signs
Your dryer will usually tell you the vent is clogging before anything goes wrong. Watch for:
- Clothes still damp after a full cycle, or needing two cycles to dry.
- The dryer hot to the touch, or the room warm and humid during a load.
- A burning smell when the dryer runs.
- Little or no airflow at the exterior vent hood when the dryer is on.
- Lint around the vent hood outside, or a flap that no longer opens fully.
Any one of these means the line needs clearing.
Why the lint trap is not enough
The lint screen catches a fraction of the lint. The rest travels down the vent line, where it collects at bends, in long runs, and at the exterior hood. Over time it narrows the pipe, the dryer works harder and hotter, and the risk climbs. A vacuum at the back of the dryer does not reach it either, the whole run has to be cleared, from the machine through the wall to the outside hood.
What proper cleaning looks like
We clear the entire run with rods and a vacuum, from the dryer, through the wall, to the exterior hood, and pull the lint out rather than push it deeper. Long or roof-run vents, common in some Barrie homes, need the right equipment to reach the whole length. It takes about fifteen minutes and it is the single best fire-safety reason to book duct work.
How often
Most homes benefit from a dryer vent cleaning once a year, sooner for a large household that runs the dryer daily or a long vent run that clogs faster. It is the easy add-on to a full duct cleaning, and cheaper done together.
Frequently asked questions
How dangerous is a clogged dryer vent?
Genuinely dangerous. About 15,000 dryer fires happen in Canada each year, and the leading cause is failure to clear the lint. It is the strongest safety reason to clean a vent.
How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
Clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, the dryer hot to the touch, a burning smell, or weak airflow at the outside hood. Any of those is a sign.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned in Barrie?
Most homes benefit from once a year, sooner for a large household or a long vent run that clogs faster.
Isn't cleaning the lint trap enough?
No. The trap catches only a fraction. The rest builds up in the vent line behind the wall, which is where the fire risk is. The whole run has to be cleared.
How much does dryer vent cleaning cost?
About $99 to $149 on its own, and less as an add-on to a duct cleaning. See dryer vent cleaning.
